Pochoir, the French word for stencil, was the labour-intensive method of fashion illustration by cutting a separate stencil for each hand-application of watercolour, to build up the depth of colour and detail of the fabric. The finest illustrators of the day were employed to produce pochoir illustrations for Gazette du Bon Ton, which was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I).
