Layers of muscles supporting and enclosing abdominal viscera. Superb hand-coloured lithograph by William Fairland from an anatomical drawing by Mr J. Walsh. Printed by Graf & Soret for Jones Quain M.D. and Erasmus Wilson's The Bones and Ligaments of the Human Body published in London circa 1842 by John Taylor or Taylor and Walton, booksellers and publishers to the University College of Upper Gower Street, Quain and Wilson were physicians to the British royal family.

Images for this series were taken from the collections of Cloquet and Loder, or from monograph treatises by Antonio Scarpa and Tiedemann, and systematic works by Mascagni and Cadani, with the addition of original drawings where required, to make them available to English-speaking people.

The text accompanies this wonderful image. Approximate page measurement is 50 x 31cm (19.75 x 15.25 inches). There is a tear to the right of "J. Walsh delt." (drawn by J. Walsh) at the base of this lithograph.
