JUSTICE WILLES (Sir Edward Willes (1723-1787) in Judges’ Robes.
Original fine mezzotint engraved c1880 by watercolourist and engraver T.G. (Thomas) Appleton, from the earlier engraving by J. Heath, after the painting by renowned English portrait and landscape artist, Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. (b.c1727 - d.1788).

Appleton's fine attempt to repeat the expressive power of late-18th, early-19th century master engravers. T.G. Appleton exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1877. Appleton’s mezzotint engravings were usually printed by eminent London publishers Henry Graves & Company of 6 Pall Mall.

This is a beautiful engraving with later colour. Printed on thick paper with strong printing-plate impression. 

The price reflects the condition - which really doesn't detract from the image. Paper size is 315 mm x 260 mm (12.3/8 inches x 10.1/4 inches). To the intaglio impression measures 190 mm x 150 mm (7.1/2 inches x 5.7/8 inches).
