Vanity Fair was a weekly periodical, and its caricature of a prominent person was the highlight of each issue - particularly the wigged gentlemen of the legal profession. 'Spy', Leslie Ward (1851-1922) was a prolific and popular caricaturist who was knighted in 1918. He was one of a select few cartoonists whose caricatures were often responsible for creating the public persona of a newsworthy individual.
