by John Tallis & Company
Sir Joseph Banks, Bart. K.B: P.R.S. Ob.1820. Engraved for Tallis & Company.
Original fine stippled steel engraving by Henry Robinson (fl.1827-1872), from the original of Sir Thomas Lawrence in the British Museum. Published in London circa 1853 by John Tallis & Company, London & New York, for Edmund Lodge's Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain. Tallis & Company were renowned for the decorative engraved borders they added to their engraved maps and prints. This would be one of the most exquisitely detailed decorative border ever to have been engraved. It is a superbly hand-coloured engraving!
Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was president of the Royal Society in London.
