Tallis engraving. Lord Viscount Duncan's Victory. c1856

by John Tallis & Company

Finely engraved antique print of Naval Victory, Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731-1804). Lord Viscount Duncan's Victory and Admiral de Winter's Resignation on Board the Venerable, Octr 11th 1797.

The defeat of the Dutch fleet off Camperdown (north Haarlem) is considered one of the most important of all naval victories. Duncan is standing on board the Venerable, gesturing out to the left and looking to the right, receiving the resignation of the Dutch Admiral de Winter, who steps forward wearing a long coat, handing out his sword, while British officers and men gather behind Howe, a man on his knees hurriedly clears away a rope and tackle on the left, another coils a rope to right and others board the ship and file below deck, with ships in the background.

Fine original steel engraving published in London circa 1854 by the London Printing & Publishing Company (previously Tallis & Co.) British naval scenes have always been very collectable. As with many of these early engravings, hand-colour has been added at a later date to further enhance the image.
