General Sir Ralph Abercromby battalion, Famars antique print. In the vignette, decoratively framed by engraved twining vines below the main engraving, King George III and the Duke of York are reviewing the volunteers.

The Attack upon the French Camp on the Hills of Famars during the siege of Valenciennes (northen France). Superb military action scene, engraved by John Rogers (a principal engraver for John Tallis and Company) after a drawing by M. Brown. This engraving was published in 1854 by The London Printing and Publishing Company (a partnership of Ephraim Brain and John Tallis from 1853).

General Sir Ralph Abercromby (1734-1801) was a Scottish soldier from 1756, and rose to the rank of lieutenant-general in the British Army. Considered the finest soldier of his generation, Abercromby restored discipline and the reputation of the British soldier. His restructuring of the army led to the ultimate defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815 - some years after Crombie died. A successful polician after his return from the Seven Years War, Sir Ralph Abercrombie was appointed Governor of Trinidad, and also served as Commander-in-Chief of Ireland. He was noted for his services in the Seven Years War, West German Campaign; the French Revolutionary Wars - Flanders Campaign, West Indies Campaign, Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland, the Irish Rebellion of 1798, French campaign in Egypt and Syria, and invasion of Syria.

This page has water staining (particularlly on the left) and some soiling. Framing with same size window as The Death of Sir Ralph Abercromby will not show this. Price is much reduced. Page measures approximately 27 x 18 cm (10 5/8 x 7 1/4 inches).
