Original mezzotint c1757, engraved on copper by Roccus Pozzi after a drawing by Francesco Lavega for the most important eighteenth century documentation of the archaeological excavations at Pompeii, Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Stabiae (Campania) on the Bay of Naples which were covered by lava when Mt Vesuvius erupted in AD79. Published in Naples c1760.
This small image has been mounted in conservation board, and covered with cellophane for protection. External measurement is 29 x 34cm (11 3/8 x 13 3/8 inches). Engraving window size, 13 x 18cm (5 1/8 x 7 inches)
