Lord Viscount Duncan's Victory antique print. Tallis engraving c1856
by John Tallis & Company
British Navy Victory, Battle of Camperdown (Kamperduin, Haarlem).
Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731-1804) led British Navy. Admiral de Winter resigning his sword on board the Venerable, October 11th 1797.
The defeat of the Dutch fleet is considered one of the most important of all naval victories. Duncan is standing on board British flagship, Venerable, receiving the resignation of the Batavian Navy Vice-Admiral Jan de Winter in long coat, handing over his sword. British officers and crew gather behind Captain Howe, with other ships in the background.
Fine original steel engraving by H. Lemon after a drawing by William Orme; published in London circa 1856 by the London Printing & Publishing Company (previously Tallis & Co.) British naval scenes have always been collectable. As with many of these early engravings, hand-colour has been added at a later date to highlight the image.
Page size is 18 x 27 cm (7 x 10.5 inches) Although they won't show if framed judiciously, it is a pity that there is a slight tear at the top extremity, and close-cropping at the base - hence price reduction.
