Wonderful underwater scene with fishing pot. Jellyfish above.

Fine chromolithograph printed in colour for The Royal Natural History edited by English geologist, naturalist and author, Richard Lydekker (1849-1915), and published in London between 1894 and 1896 by Frederick Warne and Company. It was the English publication of Brehm's Tierleben (Illustrated Life of Animals), first published in Leipzig from 1864. In the Preface to this work, Philip Lutley Sclater, (1829-1913), particularly praised the quality of the illustrations for this work, saying that they were some of the finest ever produced.

After graduating from Oxford, Philip Sclater then studied natural history for two years. He practiced law for a number of years - and frequently travelled around the world, studying nature. He wrote copiously (particularly on ornithology), and was responsible for reorganizing the Zoological Society of London and improving its membership, structures, and income. Sclater was a life fellow of the Linnaean Society, the Royal Geographical Society and the Geological Society of London - as well as a corrsponding or honorary member of more than forty other scientific societies in Great Britain and abroad.
