This is a wood engraved illustration after a sketch by topographical artist Frederick Schell. It was published within text on a page of The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia published in Sydney circa1888 to commemorate 100 years since the First Fleet settlement at Sydney. The discovery, settlement and development of Australia, New Zealand, and adjacent Pacific nations were well-documented and illustrated. The engravings were among the finest published anywhere in the world during the late 19th century.

It has been traditional that fine early illustrations have been water-coloured since publication for further enjoyment. This engraving has superb hand-colour. It would look lovely framed.
