by The Illustrated London News

Cherbourg. Mooring-Ground for Men-of-War ships. Naval scenes.

Pair of engravings on a page with descriptive text, "The inner dock of Cherbourg is 1260 feet long and 600 broad. It is capable of receiving an entire fleet, which will be quite safe from an enemy's fire, at the greatest distance at which it has been ever known to take effect.". In 1858 The Illustrated London News published information about new French port at Cherbourg (which was so important in World War II).

The Illustrated London News was the first graphic newspaper. Finely engraved illustrations of important events and discoveries from around the world ensured the success of this publication. The engraved illustrations have always been collected, hand-coloured for further appreciation, and hung on the walls of even the most humble establishment.

Page size is 275 x 395mm (10.75 x 15.5 inches).
