by Gill, Samuel Thomas

S.T. Gill antique print of Australian goldrush town of Creswick's Creek from Spring Hill, c1857.

Original steel engraving by James Tingle from a watercolour by Samuel Thomas Gill (1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published in Melbourne by Sands & Kenny circa 1857.

Having been an artist in England ST Gill migrated to Australia with his family in 1839. In Adelaide Samuel found work as an artist, but was soon lured by news of gold discoveries. By 1852 he had arrived at the Victorian gold diggings. He may not have been successful in finding gold, but over the next twenty years he produced drawings of Victoria and New South Wales, many of which were published as engravings and lithographs. S.T. Gill has left a legacy of the finest graphic record ever done of the Australian gold-rush period.

This fine engraving has minimal soiling, and a faint ink 19 at top right. The price has been reduced accordingly. Print size is 20 x 28cm (8 x 11 inches).
