South Bank of the Yarra, near Melbourne. Skinner Prout c1874.

by Prout, John Skinner

Antique print of an idyllic scene on the Yarra River near Melbourne in 1874. There is little Melbourne development in the background. This region would now be covered with buildings and a suburb of Melbourne. There is a couple of people in the foreground, and old house near a simpler earlier(?) home.

Original steel engraving by C. Cousins after the sketch by John Skinner Prout (1805-1876). Published in London circa 1874 by Virtue and Co. for "Australia Illustrated".

This engraving has lovely later hand-colour. It is in good condition, with wide borders outside the shown image. Page measures 210 x 270mm (8 1/4 x 10 5/8 inches). The size of this image is 125cm x 180cm (approximately 5 x 7 inches).
