by The Illustrated London News

Original wood engraving of The Palace, from the Steeple of St James Church, Sydney. This engraving was published in July 1879 in the Supplement to The Illustrated London News. With lovely later hand-colour, this engraving measures 180 x 515mm and has a central vertical fold. (As it was important, it was published across two pages.)

The angle of perspective shows the grand curved entry gate to the Palace (which temporarily survived the fire as it was built in local Sydney sandstone - unlike the Exhibition Building which was completely wood). In the foreground are people and transport of the period, and beyond the Garden Palace is Sydney Harbour looking out to South Heads, which puts the structure in its local setting with a magnificent backdrop.
