Gold at Bathurst in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney in New South Wales. Australia's first discovery of gold was by Edward Hammond Hargreaves, and the first gold rush was in the Central Tablelands, 200 km west of Sydney.
Original wood engraving for "The Illustrated London News" published circa 1863 (with later hand-colour). This fine engraving shows alluvial gold washing by the river through the Blue Mountains, and aborigines with gold diggers on higher terrain on the right.
This half-page engraving measures 155 x 240mm (6 x 9.5 inches). It is mounted in 70mm (2.75 inches) wide 'antique white' conservation matt board, front and back, and covered with protective cellophane.
