Original antique print. Pierre Brissaud pochoir for the Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style), published in Paris in 1914. The finest fashion illustrators of the day portrayed the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) was one of four regular contributors for this exclusive periodical. His pochoir illustrations provide a charming fashion narrative of the period.

Gazette de Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925, and distributed by Condé Nast. The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and pochoir, the French word for stencil, has been used worldwide since then to describe the labour-intensive process of illustrating by cutting around 20 separate stencils for successive application of watercolour by hand with brushes and various tools to create the detail of the artist's design and the variations of colour.
