Pochoir, the French word for stencil, was the labour-intensive method of illustration by cutting up to 20 separate stencils for successive applications of watercolour using a variety of brushes and other tools to create the fine detail of the fabrics and the depth and nuance of colour with reliable consistency throughout the print run.
