by The Illustrated London News

Rest. Antique print of a couple resting in a makeshift shelter in a vineyard.

Original wood engraving after the oil painting by illustrator, artist, and miniaturist, Thomas Uwin, R.A. (1782-1857). Apprenticed to an engraver, Uwin, left to be a miniaturist. His watercolours for frontispiece illustrations of well-known books were exhibited at the Royal Academy. He was librarian of the Royal Academy in 1845, and became Surveyor of Pictures to the Queen.

This lovely engraving of his work was published circa 1854 for "The Illustrated London News". The Illustrated London News was the world's first graphic newspaper. Published weekly from 1842, its engraved images of events and discoveries from around the world ensured its popularity. Engravings from this publication have always been avidly collected and hand-tinted with watercolour for further enjoyment. The full page size would have been 41 x 29 cm (approximately 16 x 11 inches). This engraving measures approximately 16.5 x 23cm  (6.5 x 9 inches).
