Philomena Pear. Gorgeous print, unfortunately blemished. Lithograph c1902.

by Heiges, Bertha

Pear and half, antique print. Bertha Heiges lithograph c1902.

Original colour-printed lithograph by Bertha Heiges, commmissioned by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the USDA Yearbook, published by Gray Lithography Company, New York.

Scientifically accurate paintings were used to create lithographs between 1886 and 1942 to illustrate USDA bulletins, yearbooks, and other printed publications to inspire growers across America. The majority of colour-printed lithographs were published between 1894 and 1916. Most of the accomplished botanical artists were women as art was considered acceptable as a female pursuit, and government illustrator was one of the few employments available to women artists.

It is unfortunate that this lovely lithograph has remnants of attached paper down left edge (price greatly reduced). 225 x 145mm (8 7/8 x 5 3/4 inches).
