George Shaw (1751-1813), was educated by his father, Reverend Timothy Shaw, until he attended Magdalen College, Oxford from 1765. George gained a B.A. in 1769 and M.A. in 1772. Ordained as a Deacon in 1774, Shaw left to study medicine in Edinburgh for 3 years. He was deputy-lecturer of Botany in Oxford, and gained medical degrees M.B. and M.D. in 1787. In 1788 Shaw joined the newly-founded Linnaean Society; in 1789 was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1791 he was appointed to the natural history section of the British Museum, and in 1807 George Shaw was appointed Keeper - a position he retained until he died.
