Inigo Jones. Portico for St Paul's Cathedral, London. c1725.

by Jones, Inigo

Superb design of Corinthian portico for the west end of old St Paul's Cathedral, designed by Inigo Jones as part of his classical conversion of the Cathedral when it was restored during the 1630s. Restoration ceased with Civil War against King Charles I; and the whole of this old cathedral was burnt down in the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Original copperplate engraving circa 1725 after a drawing by Colen Campbell for Vitruvius Britannicus or, the British Architect. Containing the Plans, Elevations, and Sections of the most Regular Buildings both Publick & Private in Great Britain.

Colen Campbell (1676-1729) was a Scotsman and a lawyer who became an architect. His Vitruvius Britannicus catalogued the work of great architects of the time, including Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren, as well as those of Campbell himself.

This engraving is in good condition with fine later hand-colour.
