Original hand-coloured lithograph by eminent bird illustrator, naturalist John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912). Although it is a bird of Labrador, this beautiful lithograph was included in Henry Eeles Dresser’s History of the Birds of Europe published in London circa 1871-1876.

Keulemans is considered by many to be the best lithographer of his time. He finely and accurately illustrated his birds (and sometimes animals) with wonderful sensitivity. After encouragement from John Gould’s colleague Richard Bowdler-Sharpe, from 1869 Keulemans worked in London which at the time was the centre of publications of fine hand-illustrated books on natural history subjects.
