Original colour-printed lithograph by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, after an 1847 oil painting by Charles H. Lutyens (1829-1915), for Samuel Sidney’s The Book of the Horse printed by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co of London, Paris and New York c.1874.
At the end of the 19th century, the quality of chromolithographic illustrations was exceptional. Colour-printed lithographs for Cassells Book of the Horse were often finished with hand-colour and highlighting. They are some of the finest illustrations that have ever been printed of horses.
Image measures approximately 17 x 22cm (6 ¾ x 8 ¾ inches). Page size is 21 x 27cm (8 ¼ x 10 5/8 inches). In very good condition, except for two fine extremity tears at the left, reinforced by conservation repair tape. They would not show when framed.
