Antique print of Curly-coated Retrievers. - Mr Thorpe Bartram's "Nell" and Mr Morris's  "True".

Original hand-coloured wood engraving circa 1878 by Butterworth and Heath after a sketch by A. Baker for "The Dogs of the British Isles" first published circa 1867 by John Henry Walsh (1810-1888).

Walsh was educated for the medical profession, and practised for some years as a surgeon. Walsh's passion was field sport, and as a sporting writer, he wrote many articles and books under the pen-name “Stonehenge”. His main passion was for dogs. He was an expert in the management of dogs and the treatment of their illnesses. "The Dogs of the British Islands - being a Series of Articles (with illustrations) on their Various Breeds.." was illustrated with excellent engravings and lithographs that have always been collected. In 1856 Walsh joined the staff of "The Field" journal, and by the end of the following year became its editor.
