by Hooker, William Jackson

Alyxia daphnoides antique print. Norfolk Island Daphne-like Alyxia, belonging to the Dogbane family.

This finely engraved botanical illustration shows dissections at the base of the flower and foliage. In the accompanying text it is described as "A Shrub of strong growth, inhabiting dry shaded woods on Norfolk Island, where it is no means of frequent occurence.."

Original finely engraved antique print by Joseph Swan (1796-1872) after a drawing by the eminent botanist, William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865). Published by Samuel Curtis in 1834 for Curtis's Botanical Magazine. With illustrations of botanical specimens from around the world, accompanied by information on their cultivation in England, William Curtis first published The Botanical Magazine in 1787. Still published today (now The Kew Magazine) it is the longest running continuously publlished illustrated botanical publication in the world.

Mounted between 'antique white' conservation ragmat with green-painted bevel-cut edge to the window beautifully complimenting this illustrated botanical specimen, and descriptive accompanying text hinged to the rear, it is covered in cellophane for presentation and protection until framed.  (This is a lovely pair to the previous Australian Morinda jasminoides.)
