Moule county map of Essex c1838, heavily embellished with heraldry and antiquities. Hand-coloured steel engraved map by writer on heraldry and antiquities, Thomas Moule (1784-1851) for The English Counties Delineated published in London circa 1838 by George Virtue. Moule was renowned for his superbly decorative maps. He embellished this maps of Kent by decorative border, coats of arms, and vignettes of Greenwich Hospital from the Thames, Rochester with the bridge, and Dover looking across the top of the cliffs. First issued by Moule in 1836, Moule updated and published this series of maps a number of times, until 1842.

The map is as issued, with narrow margins, and has been conservation-framed with hand-painted mattboard, U/V glass, and gold-leafed slip beneath a well-moulded swept-back-style of French-polished solid cedar frame. (Further images are available within the limitations of our scanner. Please ask.)

The map to sight edge of mount measures 200 x 265mm (8 x 10.5 inches). The map is available unframed if required for shipment. External measurement of the frame is 450 x 510mm (17.75 x 20 inches).
