Van Diemen's Island or Tasmania. Tallis antique map c1853.

Van Diemen's Island or Tasmania. Tallis antique map c1853.

by John Tallis & Company

Tallis antique map of Van Diemens Island, Tasmania published c1853 with contemporary county outlining (from time of publication), and light watercolour wash to coastine. Drawn and engraved by John Rapkin, with the illustrations by H. Warren & engraved by J. Rogers for John Tallis & Company, London and New York. This map has vignettes of Hobart, Residence of  the Van Diemen's Land Company's Agent, Circular Head, and Thylacinus cynocephalus (Thylacine).

Tallis and Company established a reputation in both London and New York as publishers of high quality books and grand atlases, by fine steel engraving illustrations further embellished with small engravings pertinent to the subject. Tallis maps were also enclosed in a finely engraved decorative border, headed by a cartouche title piece. Maps included views of major cities, typical unfamiliar flora, fauna and people.

As principal engraver of maps and prints for Tallis, John Rapkin’s ability and finesse was greatly responsible for the Company’s reputation as publishers of accurate and visually attractive maps. Illustrations decorating the maps, portraits and views were drawn and then engraved by skilled craftsmen - in reverse from a mirror image. Engraving illustrations was expensive. In 1865 Tallis was among the last publishers of beautifully decorated maps and prints.

This is the prettiest antique map ever done of Tasmania. There is slight soiling, and slight rippling at top centre, but this would not be obvious once framed - or if vignettes are coloured. The map has a central horizontal fold, as issued, to enable inclusion in a publication half the size of the map. Map size is approximately 35 x 25 cm (13.1/2 x 9.3/4 inches). Page size 35.8 x 25.8 cm (14 x 11 inches)
