Australia Antique Map with decorative border. A.J. Johnson c1870

by Johnson, A.J.

Beautiful colour-printed steel-engraved map of Australia by A.J. Johnson, New York with the stylish finely engraved border associated with Colton publishers. One of the earliest decorative maps with the correct state borders of Australia. This map shows the division of Queensland from New South Wales (following separation in 1859).

In the early 1850s Joseph’s sons George Woolworth Colton and Charles B. Colton headed the family firm. The fine engraving and decorative borders around each map became a signature of Colton presentation and assisted in establishing the Colton firm as the pre-eminent American cartographers of the day. Colton atlases were updated and re-issued many times by different publishers. In 1859 Colton sold their map plates to Alvin Jewitt Johnson, who continued to publish in the Colton style until 1885.

This map is in good condition except for a few small blemishes in the margin. Map size approximately 36 x 43cm (14 x 17 inches). This map is too big for our scanner. If you would like further pics, please email us at sales@antiqueprintclub.com
