Original steel-engraved antique map by Keith Johnston, F.R.S.E. engraved and printed by W. & A.K. Johnston of Edinburgh. Published by William Blackwood and Sons of Edinburgh and London circa 1861. This map was engraved for Johnston's Royal Atlas of Modern Geography

Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871), was geographer to Queen Victoria. Among other things, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Keith Johnston was particularly interested in physical geography, and after completing university he studied with international geographers, including Alexander von Humboldt. Publication of his first atlas National Atlas of General Geography in 1841 resulted in his 1843 appointment as Geographer Royal for Scotland. He adopted the title of "Geographer at Edinburgh in Ordinary to the Queen".

Keith began work on "The Royal Atlas of Geography" in 1855. First published in 1861, this popular "Royal Atlas" was updated and reissued many times.

As with all Keith Johnson maps, this is of good quality of thick paper, with large margins all round. Page size approximately 470 x 370mm (18.5 x 14 inches) These two maps are too large for our scanner. There is a vertical fold in the middle. They would look great framed in two windows, one above the other in one frame.
