Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. First edition Tallis map c1850.

by Tallis, J. & F.

Antique map of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, Canada, published by J. & F. Tallis c1850 with finely engraved border, and a large engraved scene of Cod Fishery off Newfoundland, vignette of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Seals of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, and Newfoundland. Coloured pen outlining of states was contemporary as published in 1850.

A finely detailed decorative antique map drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin, with illustrations drawn by A. Fussell & engraved by J. Rogers. Tallis maps were noted for their embellishment by decorative borders and small 'vignette' views depicting notable features within the region shown.

John and Frederick Tallis followed their father into the publishing business, setting up their own joint venture. Frederick left the partnership in 1851 and John Tallis continued as the driving force behind Tallis publications. John Rapkin was greatly responsible for the company's high reputation for publishing accurate, finely engraved maps. Tallis maps were among the last decorative maps published, as this extra labour-intensive skilled work added considerably to the time and cost of production.

This antique map is slightly soiled along its vertical centre fold that enabled inclusion in a publication half the size of the map. Page size is 270 x 355mm (approximately 10 5/8 x 14 inches)
