Trials of English Stage Coach Travelling from an engraving by R. Rosenberg after a painting by James Pollard, originally published by J. Watson in 1828. This print is from Coaching Days of England, containing whatever was most remarkable for Grandeur, Elegance and Curiosity in the time of the Coaches of England, comprehending the years 1750 until 1850, printed for Paul Elek in All Saints Street, Islington, in 1966.

The heavily-laden Amity stage coach toils up a steep hill on the Birmingham to Sheffield road. To spare the horses, the ten humble ‘outsiders’ have been directed to walk with guard. The unconcerned ‘insiders’ who have paid twice their fare remain aboard. Passing them, a heavy royal mail coach bumps precariously downhill with its chain or skid-pan still hanging unused beneath the coach, instead of being used as a brake, tied to the back wheels by the guard before they left the top of the hill – perhaps ready to ascend another steep hill.
