Medieval Jousting. Ancient Tournament. 18th century engraving by Grignion Chamberlain c1773.

by Chamberlain, Henry

Medieval entertainment. Antique print of Jousting. Chamberlain's History of London, c1773.

In the Middle Ages a Joust was a fight between two knights wearing armour, mounted on horses, and using lances to unseat the rider approaching at speed from the opposite direction.

Original copperplate engraving by Grignion after Wales for Henry Chamberlain’s "History of London. A new and compleat history and survey of the cities of London and Westminster, the borough of Southwark, and parts adjacent..” published in London circa 1773. This series of interesting (and sometimes controversial) views were all surrounded by a beautiful intricately engraved border of scrolls, vines and flowers. The images were published in black ink, but have frequently been coloured since - as with this engraving - greatly enhancing the scene.

Page discolouration, and slight foxing as is to be expected for 18th century engravings. Page measures 360 x 230mm (14 x 8.5), with wide borders around the engraved image. Measurement to plate mark is 245 x 160mm (9.6 x 6.25 inches).
