Au Polo. Fashion at Polo. Pochoir antique print c1913

by Taquoy, Maurice

Elegant afternoon dress with parasol at Polo Match. Designed by Charles Worth.

Charming original 1913 fashion pochoir by Maurice Taquoy for Gazette du Bon Ton (Journal of Good Style). The finest fashion illustrators of the day portrayed the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Gazette du Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I), and distributed by Condé Nast who produced Vogue.

The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and this French word for stencil has been used worldwide since that time. Pochoir was a labour-intensive process, with up to 20 separate stencils cut for consistent successive applications of watercolour by brushes and a variety of other tools to define the fabric texture and design and to built up the colour tone.
