Le Meet. (The Hunt) Fabulous Car Cloak. Pochoir c1913

by Brissaud, Pierre

Manteau de voiture de Cheruit. Designer, Madeleine Cheruit.

Original pochoir by Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) for La Gazette du Bon Ton (Gazette of Good Style), published in Paris in 1913. Brissaud was one of the four regular contributors for this exclusive periodical, and his pochoir always provided a charming fashion narrative of the period, with an appropriate caption below. The finest fashion illustrators of the day portrayed the latest fashions by prominent French designers. Gazette de Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 (with a break during World War I), and distributed by Condé Nast who also distributed Vogue.

The portrayal of fashion by the pochoir method was perfected by skilful artists in France, and this French word for stencil has been used worldwide since that time. Pochoir was a labour-intensive process, with up to 20 separate stencils cut for the application of each successive layer of watercolour by various brushes and tools to create the fabric detail and depth of colour with consistency.
