Fatehpur Sikri was built as a large palace and city, by Emperor Akbar in 1571, and was used as the capital until it was abandoned in favour of Agra Fort in 1585. "Puttypore Sicri" was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986.

Original fine steel engraving by W. Brandard from a drawing by W. Purser after a sketch by Captain Robert Elliot, R.N. for Elliot's Views of India, China, and the Shores of the Red Sea published in London circa 1835 by Peter Jackson.
