Hawkesbury coat of arms. Motto: free of dust.

by Catton, Charles/Chesham

Eagles on the Hawkesbury coat of arms c1836.
Motto, Palma non sine pulvere (Shall be Free of Dust.)

Original copperplate engraving by draughtsman, etcher, line and aquatint engraver Francis Chesham (1749-1806) after a drawing by Charles Catton (1756-1819) for The English Peerage published in London circa 1790. Published on 18th century hand-made paper, this small coat of arms has fine later hand-colour - which certainly adds to its appeal.

As they were printed two to a page, one above the other, this half-page engraving has been mounted between 'antique white' conservation ragmat board, and covered with cellophane for protection until framed.
Image within window measures 110 mm x 175 mm (4.25 x 7 inches). External frame is 240 x 305 mm (9 1/2 x 12 inches) - approximate measurements.
