Rutlandshire. Moule decorative antique map with contemporary colour c1838.

by Moule, Thomas

Antique county map of Rutlandshire, heraldry and antiquities.

Hand-coloured steel-engraved map by writer on heraldry and antiquities, Thomas Moule (1784-1851) for The English Counties Delineated published in London circa 1838 by George Virtue.

Moule was renowned for his superbly decorative maps. With its main town of Stamford, this early 19th century map of Rutlandshire shows clear geographical detail and railway line. Rutlandshire county is decoratively represented between Corinthian architectural columns that are further embellished by armorial emblems, winding foliage, coats of arms and crests, as well as vignettes of Burley House, Normanton Park and Empingham. First issued by Moule in 1836, Moule updated and published this series of maps a number of times, until 1842.

The map to sight edge of mount measures 200 x 265mm (8 x 10.5 inches).
