Tallis map of New South Wales with goldfields c1853

by John Tallis & Company

Antique map of New South Wales with gold regions c1853. New South Wales, as far north as Hervey Bay in Queensland prior to Queensland separation from New South Wales in 1859. The most decorative antique map of Queensland and New South Wales that has ever been published

This map is in its original published state, with contemporary pen outlining of state and counties borders, and pale blue hand-wash around the coast. With intricately-engraved border and vignettes, this map was published by John Tallis and Company, London & New York for Tallis's General Atlas circa 1853.

The publishing firm of Tallis flourished from 1835 to 1860, and were renowned for their beautiful steel-engraved maps and prints with decorative border and vignettes of associated subjects. Tallis maps were among the last decorative maps published, as extra fine labour-intensive skilled engraving added to the cost of production.

This map is in good condition except for slight soiling. It has a central horizontal fold that accommodated the smaller size of the publication. Map page size is 355 x 280 cm (14 x 11 inches).
