English naturalist and ornithologist John Gould was known as "the Bird Man". He combined an excellect eye for detail with business acumen, and illustrated birds of the different regions of the world, with the assistance of his artist wife Elizabeth and other skilled bird lithographers. By obtaining wealthy subscribers to each venture, John Gould published superb hand-coloured lithographs that have not been surpassed to this day.
