In Roman religion, Vulcan was the god of fire and the forge. Chiefly a god of destructive fire, Vulcan was the god of volcanoes, but soon became the god of craftsmanship (particularly metalwork), as weapons for the gods and heroes were made at his forge below Mt Aetna. 

Print reproduced from a finely detailed copperplate engraving. Twelve panels depicted ancient mythical gods who were believed to be the protectors of each month. Originally published in Paris circa 1750.
