Classical Panel for August under protection of Ceres.

Reproduction printed from a finely detailed copperplate engraving. Each of the twelve panels depict symbols representing an ancient mythical god who was believed to be the protector of that month. Originally published in Paris circa 1750.

In Roman mythology Ceres was the daughter of Saturn and Rhea, wife-sister of Jupiter, mother of Proserpina, and patron of Sicily. Ceres is the goddess of growing plants (particularly grains) and of motherly love. She was depicted in art with a sceptre, a basket of flowers and fruit, and a garland made of wheat ears.
