Colosseum, Ancient Roman Architecture Heritage Editions reproduction print.
by Rossini, Luigi
COLOSSEUM (Flavian Amphitheatre), Rome’s best known ancient building.
Heritage Editions reproduction from an etching drawn “from nature” & incised on a copperplate by Luigi Rossini (1790-1857) for Le Antichita Romane by Rossini, published in Rome between 1819 and 1823.
Rossini was born in Ravenna, studied art in Bologna with Antonio Giuseppi Basoli (1744-1843), & attended lectures in architecture (which improved his skill as an artist). When he was 23 he was awarded a prize to study in Rome, where he worked with one of the finest sculptors ever, Venetian, Antonio Canova (1757-1822). Rossini was greatly influenced by his surroundings in Rome and by the etchings of Roman archaeological antiquities c1756 by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778).
