by Gould, John

John Gould Heritage Editions Black Swan Cygnus Atratus. (Western Australian emblem).

Reproduction print published in 1982 from a hand-coloured lithograph by Henry Richter after Gould for John Gould's Birds of Australia, originally published in London between 1840 and 1848.

John Gould, known as "the Bird Man", was a naturalist who was passionate about birds. He combined an excellent eye for detail with business acumen, and illustrated the birds of different regions of the world, with the assistance of his artist wife Elizabeth and other fine bird lithographers. By obtaining wealthy subscribers prior to each venture, John Gould was able to publish series of superb hand-coloured lithographs that have not been surpassed to this day.

The digital image does not do justice to this fine print, sized as originally published, approximately 30 x 37cm (21 x 14.5 inches).
