Johann Theodor de Bry (1561-1623) engraved carefully grouped flower portraits. His illustrations were noted for their elegant form and sumptuous color. They were engraved on copper plates between 1611 and 1614, at a time when appreciation and cultivation of flowers was undergoing a revolution. Botanical art flourished. Common garden flowers were keenly admired and often painted.
