Tallis decorative map of Western Australia or Swan River from c1851

by Tallis & Company, John

Swan River settlement in Western Australia. Map by John Tallis & Co. A very decorative colour-printed map of Western Australia and the Swan River Settlement colony, this map was originally published by Tallis & Company circa 1851.

The most decorative map of New South Wales and Queensland ever printed, it was reproduced from a finely-engraved hand-coloured map originally published for Tallis's General Atlas circa 1851-3. The publishing firm of Tallis flourished from 1835 to 1860, and were renowned for their fine steel-engraved maps and prints. Tallis maps were among the last decorative maps published, as the skilled engraving work became uneconomical. All Tallis maps were adorned by decorative borders and vignettes of cities, native fauna or people of the region shown.
