First English Map of Australia. Heritage Editions Bowen map from 1744.

First English Map of Australia. Heritage Editions Bowen map from 1744.

by Bowen, Emanuel

Important map of New Holland. Land of the South. First English map of Australia by itself (not as part of a world map or map of Asia or Pacific).

Numbered Limited Edition reproduction ( of 750) from Emanuel Bowen's Hollandia Nova-Terra Australis copperplate-engraved map published in 1744. Bowen's map was an English version of the 1664 map published by French traveller and author of discoveries from around the world, Melchisedec Thevenot.

This chart of Australia is especially interesting because of the captions Bowen added in the areas where land had not been discovered. These captions emphasize the care taken when transposing the information they had, and also detailed exploration being done during the period. This map of Australia was published 26 years prior to Captain Cook's charting of the east coast; the culmination of Cook's search for the 'great south land'.

Map size: 46cm x 59cm (18 x 23.25 inches). Print size: 52cm x 65cm (20.5 x 25.5 inches).

[This Limited Edition chart is also available (next listing), with coastline and cartouche hand-tinted with watercolour.]
