Reproduction from a hand-coloured double-sphere world map c.1630 by Henricus Hondius (1587-1638), for Mercator’s Atlas published from 1633 to 1658. The first map to show Dutch discoveries along the northern coast of Australia, it is grandly embellished by the four elements of fire, air, water and earth, as well as small portraits of Julius Caesar and cartographers Claudius Ptolemy, Gerard Mercator & Jodocus Hondius.

(This map was reissued c.1638 in enlarged Novus Atlas by Jan Janssonius (1647-1662), who married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius in 1612, and published maps with his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius.)
