La Nuova Olanda e La Nuova Guinea. Cassini, New Holland and New Guinea.

Showing Captain Cook’s charting of the east coast of Australia, this was the first Italian map of Australia, published in Rome in 1798 by Calografia Camerale for Cassini’s Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale  (New Universal Geographic Atlas).

Reproduction (1 of 500) from rare copperplate-engraved map by Dominican friar, Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745-c.1824). Cartouche (title) includes Baroque-styled natives with bows and arrows. When young, Cassini learned etching and engraving as a pupil working in Rome with the greatest etcher-engraver and restorer of Roman antiquities (with Baroque influence), Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

Paper size is 455 x 650mm (approximately 18 x 25.5 inches). Map size is 365 x 500cm (14.3/8 x 19.3/4 inches).
