Brisbane (from South Brisbane). Armytage view c1874

by Armytage, J.C.

Brisbane from South Brisbane with aboriginals in foreground.

Heritage Editions reproduction printed from a hand-coloured steel engraving drawn and engraved (from a photograph), by prominent English topographical artist James Charles Armytage (1802-1897) for Australia Illustrated published in London c1874.

South Brisbane from the junction of Merivale Street and Ernest Street, looking towards North Quay. On the left is the first temporary wooden bridge before its destruction by marine borer and collapse in 1867. The Presbyterian church in the foreground was in Grey Street.

J.C. Armytage did not come to Australia. Explorer/artist Thomas Baines (1820-1875) painted the same scene in oils, despite not having been to Brisbane during his time in Australia. The photograph was most likely obtained from Richard Daintree, Agent-General for Queensland in London from 1872.
